Buried in Fletcher Cemetary, Wolf Creek on Peter Cove. He was an old-time preacher (in my family's speak that is fire and brimstone)
HOWARD, Moses (I470)

2

According to Velvie (Preece) Maynard, there was a rumor (which she couldn't say one way or the other) that Major was the son of Elisha Howard, Ben's brother and that was why Ben left Bitha. This would certainly explain it and marketplace DNA wouldn't sort that question out since the two brothers would have the same DNA lineage.

To most children in Martin County in the 1950s, Major is remembered for bringing big screen films like The Lone Ranger to their mountain communities. He would bring his reels and project these movies on a large bedsheet. Admission was about 25 cents and you could bring your own snacks. Without his portable motion picture set-up, many, like Thelma Moore from the Martin County Historical & Genealogical Society, report they would never have seen a movie in their childhood.

His children also report that he had a knack for repairing electronics which he did a lot around the house and neighborhood. He also owned a repair shop in Beauty in Martin County, Kentucky for a number of years.

Many people wonder how he got so many names. You won't find them recorded, because no birth record was issued at the time of his birth. James Harvey comes from his maternal grandfather's name. Samuel comes from his maternal great grandfather, Samuel Moore (Tabitha-3, Winnie-2, Samuel-1). His only original name was Major and it is by this name that he was mostly known. As we have already visited, Howard was his father's surname and Preece was his mother's surname. For his marriage to Mary Alice Branham on the Kentucky side of the river, he recorded his name as Major Preece. For his marriage to June Porter on the WV side of the river, he recorded his name as Samuel Howard. Finally, for his marriage to Susie Maynard on the Kentucky side of the river, he again used the name Major. Many people knew his full name as James Major Preece. So, the only name not used on any records was Harvey. His first wife, Mary Alice, and her family had a storied history of using aliases, but his use of these names is traceable to family names and exceeds that of random aliases. His son, Paul, said he always heard his father's full name was as it is listed here and so, I agree based on documentation and family traces.
HOWARD-PREECE, James Harvey Samuel (I4351)

‪Elizabeth Moore Pillow ‪Pamela Moore I have not been able to find anything from when they were in Virginia. My Dad was told this story... two brothers came over the mountain from Virginia. He thought it was Samuel and Sampson. They fought a bear with a Bowie knife to save their dog and one (Sampson ?) lost his ear. I cannot find anything about Samuel's siblings or parents so far. Samuel and Mary are my GG Grandparents on Dads side.

‪Pamela Moore Ah...okay...I would really love to speak with you then...especially when I get to that chapter. There are four folks now from Link's line that are/could contribute greatly. Andrew Moore his 2nd great grandson and his father, Vince, came to the reunion last year and we spent a day and a half together...my Uncle brought his truck and took us up to the cemetery. ‪Dorothy "Dot" is from Link's line too! I've also been chatting with Jackie Moore over on ancestry.com (your Sam was her grandpa)...so, I feel like we're starting to reunite the family! That's what I'm hoping for!
